Liberty Church (originally Liberty Bible Church) began from a community of believers who were seeking a place to worship God in Spirit and who had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Lord began moving in their lives and drawing them together from across Birmingham. The year was 1973. A group of believers met with Bro. Ken Sumrall, founder of Liberty Church and Liberty Bible College in Pensacola,FL to discuss establishing a charismatic church. Throughout 1974, various pastors from Liberty Church of Pensacola would come and preach. In May 1974, John Stitt was officially appointed as the first pastor by Bro. Ken Sumrall. After a short stint meeting at the Admiral Benbow Inn in Homewood, the church purchased a church building in Bluff Park. In July 1975, Pastor Charles Freeman became senior pastor until January 1979 when Pastor C.L. ‘Bill’ Stamp assumed pastoral responsibilities. Under Bro. Bill's leadership the church grew and flourished. The beginning of many integral parts of Liberty began under Bro. Bill's leadership including prayer ministry, outreach ministries, marriage ministry, worship ministry, drama and musicals, evangelism ministry, equipping and training, etc. In 1996, Pastor Bruce Terry took over senior pastor responsibilities after serving as both youth pastor (1984) and outreach pastor (1992). Under Bruce's leadership, the church has become kingdom oriented, equipping and sending out people into the community and across the globe, and the church continues to be a haven for the hurting to find hope and healing. |
